Growing up, John showed a talent for art and could regularly be found with a pad and pencil in hand. At the age of 18, he discovered a
knack for hand lettering when his neighbor asked him to paint the name on his boat. It turned out so well that he received several more
requests to paint names on boats. This inspired him to seek work in a sign shop.
Over the next few years John honed his craft, eventually opening his own shop. When computer cut vinyl replaced paint and brushes,
John set himself apart by continuing to put an artistic flair into his work.
In the late 1990s, due to increased competition from franchises, John decided his talents would best be served by specializing in what he
loved most, making custom lettering for boats. He soon became the exclusive lettering provider for several of Central Florida’s largest boat
dealerships.
At this time he re-named the business Cap’n John’s Boat Lettering.
Cap’n John’s was one of the earliest adopters of online ‘do-it-yourself’ boat lettering. In 2003, he added a simple Boat Name Designer to
his website. It was originally intended as a convenient way for local clients to approve their lettering before it was made. Within a matter of
weeks, however, he started receiving calls from boaters all over the country who found his website and wanted to have lettering made for
their boat. An order system was devised and within a year, online orders began to surpass local orders.
Today, Cap’n John’s remains a leader in quality boat lettering. His attention to detail, superior service, and reputation for using quality
materials has earned him a loyal following. Over 60% of his business is from referrals and repeat clients.
